Rudraksha is the name for the seeds of the tree Elaeocarpus ganitrus, which are used for prayer beads in Hinduism and Buddhism. The name comes from Sanskrit and is composed of the names Rudra (Shiva) and aksha (tears). The tree grows in the foothills of the Himalayas to Southeast Asia, Nepal, Indonesia, New Guinea and beyond. Legend has it that after a long meditation, Shiva shed a tear from which a tree was formed.
